Moscow's Calling October 6-8 2017

Dear friends,

For all of us tango meetings with friends and favorite partners is a great joy, so we’re inviting you again to our annual Moscow tango marathon FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE that will take place on October 6-8 2017 in Moscow.

Three times we’ve already welcomed guests from all over the world. And it was really great! We spent together an unforgettable weekend: wonderful tandas from best DJs, tasting of Russian cuisine cooked with so much love by Russian tangueras and even tangueros, folk music, songs and dances. Some of you visited with us the Kremlin, Red Square and Metro which is considered by many to be the most beautiful underground in the world. And the staunchest tangueros can now proudly say that they have danced in the Bolshoi Theatre! We did our best so that each of you would feel what is famous Russian hospitality!

Our dance floor is 250 m2 and we’re ready to welcome again 200 people. And of course we’re preparing for you our traditional gifts: a mega-surprise from the organizers and tours around the most beautiful places in Moscow!

The registration is open:
- for foreign participants and international couples;
- starting from May 28 2017 at 21:00 (Moscow time) - for Russian participants.

The marathon price will include participation in the marathon, drinks, snacks, sweets and fruit!

We guarantee you the gender balance (equal number of leaders and followers at the marathon) and international one, while the atmosphere we guarantee are your happy smiles and warm embraces! (Last marathon it was amazing and we’re sure it’ll be even better this year).

Dear foreign guests! We will be glad to give you any possible assistance in all the matters related to getting visa to Russia. Numerous last year foreign participants proved that it’s not as difficult as it seems and that it’s doable! Do not hesitate to contact us on any matter!

Moscow Travel Guide

Getting visa

To travel to Russia almost all of foreign citizens need a visa.

Russian entry visa is issued by the Embassy or a Consulate of the Russian Federation in the country of your residency based on the Visa Support. The Visa Support includes: a Foreign Traveler Entry Permit & a Tourist Voucher registered with the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

To obtain a visa you need:
1. Order of documents submission and terms of registration can be specified in the nearest Russian consulate.

2. Please fill in online form and obtain a visa invitation.

IMPORTANT! If you’re planning to stay for a longer period, indicate the dates of your stay, regardless of where you stay before or after the marathon. For example, if you arrive in Moscow on 06.10, stay with friends or in another hotel till 07.10, from 07.10 to 09.10 stay at the Sheremetevsky hotel, and then move to another hotel, indicate in the invitation entry form of the Sheremetevsky hotel the period of your stay as 06.10-14.10. It will not mean that you will have to stay the whole period at the Sheremetevsky or bear any financial responsibility for the dates you won’t stay there, it’ll just provide you with the invitation for this whole period.

3. Please fill in the form on the MOFA website and indicate there your visa invitations.

ATTENTION! Before applying for this invitation and paying for it please make sure that the Russian Embassy in your country does not require an original!

Please, pay attention, the visa to Russia looks like on the foto below( some difference possible). But for sure it is pasted into your passport by the Embassy or a Consulate of Russia.

Moscow Survival Guide

Dear friends!

To simplify your stay in Moscow and to help you survive in our city and enjoy it, we’ve prepared some useful info and some tips, answering some of the questions you might have!

Myth: It’s impossible and extremely expensive to get Russian visa

We understand that most of you are not used to needing visa to travel around and we are sorry that there’s such an obstacle but we can try to simplify the process by giving some tips here and providing you with an invitation from the hotel. Besides, each time we travel to most countries we do apply for a visa and believe us – it’s doable!

When you receive the confirmation letter from the marathon team, pay the participation fee and we see the money transfer, you can proceed with the visa. As you book the package with the hotel accommodation, to save your money the hotel can provide you with an invitation (additional 700 ₽ = about €9) with which you apply directly to the Russian Embassy. So, overall price will be about €60 (depending on the visa price in your country). That’s one option. Mind that in some countries the Russian Embassy demands the original of the invitation. If so, we can try to deliver it to you with our ‘messangers’ at some tango event.

The second option, which many of our European friends have tried, is to get a visa via a travel agency. It will be more expensive (about €100 more or less) but it saves you time and all the hassle.

Myth: Moscow is such a huge and dangerous city where nobody speaks English and there are no signs in English so I can easily get lost!

Well, like in every big city of the world you need to be careful, don’t put your wallet in jeans pocket. Be careful in the center and touristic places. Do not speak with people who want to sell you something on the street. Like everywhere. But otherwise, actually, Moscow is safer than many other cities on the planet where we travel. Here we collected some advice on how to get around in Moscow safe and sound.

Getting from the airport

No matter which airport you arrive (Vnukovo, or Domodedovo or Sheremetievo) – the fastest, the most comfortable and the cheapest way to reach the city is aeroexpess trains. You can check all information here. You also can buy your ticket online to save your time at the airport.

Do not be too upset if you don’t meet big bears in Moscow streets, as many will warn you about, and if you do you’re not recommended to come too close or to, God forbid, to pat it, otherwise we can’t guarantee your safety ;)!

Public transport

Metro, which is the most beautiful metro in the world and a point of sightseeing designed and decorated by famous Russian artists, by the way, is the best choice during day time. It’s fast (trains go every 2-4 minutes) and easy to understand (as each line has its own color).Or you can use this interactive map - first link on the station of departure (eg. Byelorusskaya) and then - on the station where you need to go (eg. Timiryazevskaya), and you'll see the route. It also has a printable version.

Buying your Ticket

At the ticket booth ‘KACCA’, you can buy a Metro ticket even without speaking a single word of Russian. Use your gestures ;) Just hold up the number of fingers you need, meaning the number of "rides" you want. The more – the cheaper. you can find a price list posted in the window by the cashier. It is typically on a A4 piece of white paper and the type is small, but you will be able to see a list of prices for 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 or 60 rides, and a bunch of other info (there are a number of different ticket combinations, most of which are irrelevant to the visiting tourist). The price for a single ride ticket is 50 ₽, for a 2 ride ticket 100 ₽. Each person in your party does not necessarily have to have a separate ticket. If there are two of you, you can each ride 5 times, on a 10 ride ticket. So, simply step up to the cashier and hold up ten (or five or one) fingers, and put your money down. The cashier will give you a card, which serves as your ticket. The cashier will also make change, if you don't have exact change.

At any station you can also buy a ticket for 1 or 2 rides at the ticket machine, which is blue and generally situated near the KACCA.

For visitors who don't speak or read Russian, the Metro can be a bit intimidating at first, but like many things, once you get past the initial fear, it proves to be quite simple. Check the full How to use the metro guide.

Last train starts from every last station at 01:00 and also this is the last time for every connection between the line to stop. So if you enter the station at 00:30 you have a good chance to reach your destination. But be careful and read the next part.

Many Moscow drivers prefer role-play Schumachers at Formula 1, especially the ones driving porches or sport cars, so don’t expect them to stop at every pedestrian zebra, and take care when crossing the streets.

Transport at night time

Official taxi is one choice. Check out this service, or call them +7 495 940-88-88. All the operators speak English, and the minimal payment for any trip is 400 ₽ (first 20 minutes), which is about €6.

Also you can ask locals for telephone or help to order. Mind that in most of the cases taxi drivers do not speak English. In Moscow exists another option – non official “taxi”. That means you just stop a car on the road by raising your hand and negotiate the price with the driver. Of course they don’t speak English so you will need the help of locals for that and they also tend to raise the price as soon as they see you’re not a local. But it can be cheaper than official ones.

Money change

By now approximate rates are: €1 = 75 ₽, $1 = 65 ₽. It’s more safe to change money in banks, or you can use ATM all around the city.

And mind that we do not recommend you drinking more than a shot of vodka the first thing in the morning ;) When raising a glass with a group of Russian people, do not say "Na zdorov'ye!". This is not a toast; it's something Russian people say when somebody thanks them for a nice meal. Although Russian people make toasts with practically every sip of a drink, they usually say a unique toast every time, e.g. "To our friendship!". If you want to make a toast in Russia, stick with "За Вас!" (Za vas!), which means "To you!" and is very acceptable.

Where to eat

There is a huge number of Italian and Japanese restaurants all around the city. Sometimes they are even combined in one place which offers you two types of menus. Usually they are not expensive. Another good option is self-service restaurants with Russian cuisine. Here is the list of metro stations, near which you can find Mu-Mu (Му-Му in russian) or Elki-Palki (Ёлки-палки in Russian). There are a lot of nice cafes in Moscow and exotic restaurants too so in fact in the center you can find whatever you want.

However we recommend you not to eat more than three spoonfuls of black caviar at a time ;)

Myth: Tickets to Moscow are so expensive that I can’t afford it!

True, tickets to Moscow are more expensive than within Europe but if you look for indirect flights with stopovers or lowcosters, like AirBaltic or AirBerlin, for example, they are affordable. Try scyscanner.ru, for example. And if you haven’t found a good option, contact us and we’ll try to find and recommend you the best options available! Tatyana is really good at that!

Myth: I heard there’s a strong gender misbalance in Moscow tango so as a follower I’m afraid of the competition with Russian ladies

Yes, like in many other cities, at a regular milonga usually there are more women than men, but our marathon is GENDER BALANCED so you don’t need to worry about that and besides Moscow leaders are very interested in dancing with new nice ladies they have never embraced with before!

Myth: As a leader I heard a lot of stories about how difficult it is to survive cabezeo from Russian ladies ‘shooting’ at you with it

First, see the poit above and second, we’re not that aggressive and all foreign tangueros have survived their visits to Moscow so far, not to mention many of them liked it so much that they’ve become Moscow regular visitors!

Sightseeing

As we can imagine for many of you it will be the first time in Moscow and as you’ve come that far you would like to combine tango with some sightseeing. And we think that even those who have been to our wonderful city before might want to enjoy its beauties once again.

So we’re preparing for your some sightseeing program with several optional tours.

On Friday, before the marathon (we’ll leave the hotel at about 12:00) we’ll have a chance to see legendary Red Square, to learn where its name comes from, along with the famous Saint Basil’s Cathedral (the one that Napoleon was trying to transfer to Paris but luckily for us didn’t manage to) – all this with a guide and FOR FREE! And those most curious ones and fans of history and architecture can even enter The Kremlin, see the Cathedral Square where all Russian tsars were crowned, enjoy the cathedrals’ magnificent frescos and find out what is so special about the Tsar Cannon and Tsar Bell. For this part you will only have to buy the entrance tickets to the Kremlin, which cost about €8.

«From Russia with Love» Moscow tango marathon. Sightseeing, Metro

Have you heard that the Moscow underground, which is called the Moscow Metro, is one of the most beautiful in the world, where many stations were designed and decorated by the most prominent and talented Soviet artists of the 1930-1950? So, on Sunday, after the music stops, our program is not over by far! On the way to the afterparty at a local Moscow milonga (leaving the hotel at about 20:00) we’re going to dive into this amazing world of the Moscow Metro and have a ride around it so that you’ll see with your own eyes why it’s so famous worldwide! Again, all this (except the afterparty entrance fee) is FOR FREE!

«From Russia with Love» Moscow tango marathon. Sightseeing, night city
«From Russia with Love» Moscow tango marathon. Sightseeing, night city

But if you think that this day will be over after the afterparty, you’re mistaken! On the way back we’re going to enjoy a totally different Moscow – a night city which never sleeps and which is magnificently bright and empty at that time of the day… This tour will be included in the price of the shuttle from the afterparty back to the hotel.

And the staunchest tangueros staying for Monday as well will be able to see the legendary Bolshoi Theatre inside out! It’s an exclusive tour for only 15 people provided by the Bolshoi’s guide. The price of the tour is about €35. So let us know if you’re interested in it so that we’ll book it in advance and in case we have 15 people it will be a totally tango tour!

Remember also that our main aim is to make your stay in Moscow as pleasant and memorable as possible, so we’re totally flexible and can enlarge our program or decide on the spot what else we can see and do, not mentioning some nice surprises you’re in for!

So stay tuned and looking forward to see you in Moscow!
